Marais Nouveau: A New Portrait, a New Method

a lecture/demonstration/class by

Jonathan Dunford

Date: Saturday, March 29, 2008

Time: 2 pm to 5 pm

Where: the home of Jillian Samant, 26 East 22 Street, #9, New York City (between Broadway and Park Avenue)

The VdG/GNY is excited to present the New York City teaching debut of Jonathan Dunford, an American who has lived in Paris since 1985.

Over the last two decades, Mr. Dunford has become one of the principal forces in the resurgence of solo seventeenth century music for unaccompanied bass viol, performing to critical acclaim throughout Europe and winning such prizes as the diapason d’or and the choc de la musique for his recordings.

Among his musicologic contributions are editions of many previously unpublished works for solo viol and articles for the New Grove's Dictionary. Members of on-line early music and viol list serves will be familiar with Mr. Dunford’s consistently cogent, informed, and generous contributions.

In the first part of the event, Mr. Dunford will discuss a portrait that had long been considered to depict Johannes Schenck, leading us through the many clues that firmly establish it as a representation of Marin Marais. This lecture will be FREE to members.

Following a short break, Mr. Dunford will lead a technique class using exercises and examples from the first volume of his newly published tutor, which concentrates on French viol technique as it was practiced in Paris at the time of Sainte-Colombe and Marin Marais, making extensive use of historical treatises, such as Jean Rousseau’s 1687 method from Paris. Please bring a bass viol if you whish to participate.

A few copies of Mr. Dunford’s tutor may be available for purchase at the class.
